State Senator Jeff Van Drew Welcomes Outspoken Library Kiosk to Avalon

State Senator Jeff Van Drew and Avalon Mayor Marty Pagliughi paid a visit to the Avalon Free Public Library to get a hands-on demonstration of the new Outspoken Library kiosk installed by the NJ State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC). Through the kiosk, over 18,000 digital books and 42 magazines are accessible for download to be played on a TBBC-issued digital talking book player. The free player may be issued to anyone with a disability which makes reading a book difficult, such as blindness, dyslexia or loss of a limb.

Adam Szczepaniak, director of TBBC, outlined the highlights of the program and stressed its importance, "a person who has always read books can continue to read by accessing this program in libraries throughout New Jersey. They don't have to give up their love of reading." Twenty NJ libraries already have kiosks installed, with a total of 43 planned."

"I am so pleased we were able to restore the funding to libraries in the state for services such as this," said Van Drew. "I am so proud of the mayor and the Avalon Library for making a difference."

The Outspoken Library Kiosk is available for use during library business hours. These services are available to anyone who cannot read a standard book as a result of blindness, or physical and cognitive disabilities. A link on the library's webpage contains application forms for download. Interested persons can also contact the Talking Book and Braille Center at http://njsltbbc.org/ or call (800) 792-8322.

Other topics included library technology, e-rate, marketing, the BTOP Program, per capita state aid, library law and finance, and budget and financial reporting. They were also given an overview of State Library programs and resources provided through the State Library Information Center and Library Development Bureau.
